You read the title correctly. I’m a one-man show and always on-call. My clients can attest, whether they live in America or Australia, somehow I’m always able to answer their emails within minutes, and in the most extreme cases, within hours.
Over the past decade or so, I’ve had the pleasure of working with wonderful people around town and around the world. My goal has always been to exceed my clients’ expectations and to ensure they and their clients are satisfied.
I believe one of the keys to my success is my response time. That’s not to say that you can expect quality work to be done quick. Like the saying goes: Rome was not built in a day. Response time, however, should be prompt. The last thing a client needs is to wait a day or two only to hear back that you can or can’t take on a project. They will inevitably find someone else.
I’m based in Ottawa, Canada (Eastern Standard Time), and my clients in my time zone (Toronto, Montreal, New York, etc.) start work around 9am. I typically start my day around 6am. There’s specific reason for this, which I’ll get to at the end of this post, but this helps me serve all my clients in my time zone in case they get up early as well. Around noon, my colleagues on the west coast (California, Texas, etc) arrive to work. This means they finish work a few hours later than me, but I’m more than happy to stick around to help out however I can.

Where things get tricky is for my clients in the Middle East, specifically Dubai, who are 9 hours ahead. This is why I start my day at 6 am, because I can still catch them before they leave work in their afternoon. This also applied to my colleagues across the pond in the United Kingdom and Europe; where they are 5 to 6 hours ahead of me.
Then there are the variations in weekends around the world. In the western world, weekends are Saturday and Sunday. However, in the Middle East, it’s Friday and Saturday. So, although my North American colleagues are off Sunday, the ones in Dubai are not. Lastly, my Sunday evening is a new Monday morning in Australia, and hence why I say I am available 24-7.
